Title:               UX Research Intern

Reports to:     UX Manager



The AEO UX team shapes the omni-channel customer experience across AEO brands. We use a variety of research techniques to help us understand our customers’ needs, then turn that into valuable and engaging experiences online, in-store and in-between. Our mission is to help our customers feel confident and comfortable in our products and create a deep, lasting connection with our brands.

Our team is made up of designers and researchers who collaborate with each other and cross-functional partners to identify problems, explore solutions and drive continuous improvement for our customer. You have an analytical mind and a passion for the craft of research and UX experience and  love exploring problems and learning new things. Empathy is your key driver, and you want to be a part of a collaborative environment whose teams care about the experiences they are creating and the impact they have on meeting customer expectations and business objectives.

As a UX Research intern, you’ll be engaged in a range of qualitative and/or qualitative research tools and methods to help us better understand our customer experience. You’ll be working with senior researchers and designers to identify the research need as well as integrate complex technical and business requirements. 



  • Working with senior researchers to plan research proposals and prepare research protocols as well as conduct research efforts for AEO’s digital properties.
  • Helping identify the best research tool/methods based on priorities, research questions, timeline, and resources.
  • Executing qualitative and quantitative research methodologies such as usability studies, surveys, interviews, competitive scanning, ethnography and journey mapping;
  • Identifying opportunities for improvement of existing research processes and tools
  • Based on your background, working with  quantitative research and data analytics to identify themes and trends which surface in high volumes of data. You are familiar with metrics and statistical analysis. High proficiency in Excel is required and experience with Qualtrics or other quantitative data collection platforms is a plus.
  • Helping senior researchers and designers interpret and understand user feedback and provide recommendations to business and design decisions based on that feedback.
  • Ensuring effective communication of research findings by crafting compelling, data-driven insight reports about our users and their needs.
  • Participate in project meetings and support program deliverables.

We expect you to be able to work independently as well as with strong direction and collaboration with our team of researchers, designers and product managers.

At the end of the internship, you will have artifacts and case studies you can include in your portfolio.



  • Minimum of two years working towards a Bachelor’s or Master's Degree in Design, Human-Centered Interaction, Psychology, Information Design, Statistics, Human Factors, Social Science, or a related field or other design equivalent discipline.
  • Students are eligible after they have completed their junior year at a 4 year college or university; Students enrolled in a Master’s program are also eligible
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA required
  • Experience working in a collaborative team environment to deliver high-quality design solutions.
  • A demonstration of  research experience and deliverables (e.g., course work and projects which show study plans, methods used, techniques, reports, deliverables, etc.)
  • Knowledge of user-centered design, UX methods, UI/UX design, or human subjects research & experimental design a plus
  • Experience with visual design and collaboration  tools such Miro, Google Docs.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good reasoning skills and the ability to back up your research recommendations.
  • Passion for retail and knowledge of the AEO Inc. family of brands and/or experience in retail and/or omni-channel eCommerce.
  • Working knowledge of retail business model(s) and experience metrics  through classes, internships or prior work experience
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment
  • Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines and reporting
  • Must be willing to live and work in Pittsburgh, PA for 10 weeks June-August 2022.
  • Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving and presentation skills;  able to speak fluently to business teams, designers, and other stakeholders.
  • Enjoy a collaborative work in a dynamic, data-driven, creative environment.
  • Experience with or working in Data Science a plus.

  • The internship will be 10 weeks from June 2022 through August 2022
  • Each intern will be considered seasonal/temporary in nature
  • Each Intern will be assigned a coach to guide them through their experience
  • Each Intern will be asked to share results of their work with AEO Management at the conclusion of the Internship.
