Title:    UX Design Intern
Reports to:    UX Manager

ABOUT THE TEAM:

The AEO UX team shapes the omni-channel customer experience across AEO brands. We use a variety of research techniques to help us understand our customers’ needs, then turn that into valuable and engaging experiences online, in-store and in-between. Our mission is to help our customers feel confident and comfortable in our products and create a deep, lasting connection with our brands.

Our team is made up of designers and researchers who collaborate with each other and cross-functional partners to identify problems, explore solutions and drive continuous improvement for our customer. ABOUT THE ROLE:

As a UX intern, you will be responsible for understanding the needs of the AE/Aerie customer in order to champion the best experience for assigned projects over the course of your internship.

You will conduct research and analyze data in partnership with UX Researchers to understand customer needs and behaviors to inform design recommendations. You will also work with UX Designers as well as cross-functional partners in Product Management and Creative Design to carry over your research findings to define and inform wireframe creation, user flows and interactive prototypes at all levels of fidelity to conceptualize and communicate recommended experiences.

You will practice storytelling in the delivery of your work, building strong communication skills in the presentations of status updates, findings and recommendations to project partners.

At the end of the internship, you will have a final deliverable to use in your portfolio.

UX ROLE BREAKDOWN:

  • UX Design Support - 80%
    • Use data to uncover customer needs across a portion of the customer journey
    • Identify opportunities and explore design solutions
    • Generate wireframes and interactive prototyping at all levels of fidelity (from sketch to finished prototype)
    • Plan and run usability testing and communicate findings
    • Envision and document interaction design
    • Present design solutions using clear, effective storytelling and communication
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop project requirements and coordinate deliverables
  • UX Research Support – 10%
    • Identify appropriate research objectives and activities to achieve project goals
    • Work independently or with other researchers to implement research methods and activities
    • Report on user research at the appropriate fidelity (from ad hoc requests to formal stakeholder reviews)
    • Translate data insights into actionable recommendations for partners or the UX Design team
  • Work Planning and Project Management – 10%
    • Manage timelines and priorities for individual tasks
    • Attend necessary meetings and present UX design / research work as needed
    • Learn how to work within an Agile environment to meet project milestones and deadlines

INTERNSHIP DETAILS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The internship will be 10 weeks from June 2022 through August 2022
  • Each intern will be considered seasonal/temporary in nature
  • Each Intern will be assigned a Coach & Mentor to guide them through their experience
  • Each Intern will be assigned a project which will be presented to AEO Management at the conclusion of the Internship
  • Use your UX passion, knowledge and creativity (and our access to users through social, on-site, in-stores, etc.) to determine the right user research activities based on project needs/requirements
  • Help to create and give input for the omni-channel UX design for designated projects, work streams and across all touch points (mobile, tablet, web, in-store, etc.)
  • Understand user-centered design best practices, principles and approaches
  • Ability to articulate and share your experience design decision making process to business partners
  • Constantly scan the UX horizon for innovative experiences that continue to push the envelope and blur the lines between in-store and digital shopping experiences


TRAINING OVERVIEW:

  • Opportunities to learn the in’s and the out’s of User Experience research and design, including but not limited to the building, execution and analysis of user tests, wireframe creation, user flow and interactive prototypes generation.
  • On-the-Job training with assignments guided by an individual Mentor
  • Classroom learning
  • 1 larger project and 2-3 smaller projects (all of which can be used as portfolio pieces).Roundtables with top level executives
  • Mid-Program and Final self-evaluations to understand progress throughout program
  • Pre-planned events around Pittsburgh to get to know the city that AEO loves to call home!


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Students are eligible after they have completed their junior year at a 4 year college or university; Students enrolled in a Master’s program are also eligible
  • Preferred majors include: Design, Marketing, Human-Computer Interaction and Business
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA required
  • Passion for retail and knowledge of the AEO Inc. family of brands
  • Experience in retail and/or omni-channel eCommerce is a plus
  • Portfolio of work demonstrating UX design skills
  • Working knowledge of retail business model(s) and experience metrics through classes, internships or prior work experience
  • Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment
  • Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines and reporting
  • Must accommodate living and working in Pittsburgh, PA for 10 weeks June-August 2022
