POSITION TITLE: Director – Carrier Relations
REPORTS TO:  VP – Global Logistics   
DIRECT REPORTS:           Analyst – Carrier Relations; potential for broader team in the future

As the Director of Carrier Relations at AEO, Inc., you will be responsible for understanding our end-to-end logistics capabilities and defining requirements and modes of transportation to drive excellence in the movement of 200M+ units worldwide annually. You will be responsible for continuously assessing and optimizing all logistics requirements and services in order to meet AEO’s supply chain operational goals. In addition, you will inspire your team and lead efforts to deliver sound results and enforce stellar carrier performance.

Your responsibilities include:

Developing and leveraging in-depth knowledge of carrier networks to garner transportation insights that provide the best combination of cost and service for all movements of freight; driving cost savings, service management and technology adherence to ensure customer delight and consistent achievement of the customer promise 

Leading the preparation and negotiation of air and ocean contracts and overseeing negotiations of contracts in partnership with AEO Legal teams and direct report(s); ongoing development and monitoring of the quality and capability of the logistics network to ensure that needs are being met in accordance with key performance indicators

Working closely with AEO’s Supply Chain teams as well as key cross-functional business partners (Digital, Store Operations, Inventory Planning, Finance, Legal, etc.) to understand business drivers/changes, profitability goals and service requirements; enabling smart logistics capabilities and defining the necessary requirements / modes of transportation to support the needs of the Company and customer

Performing analysis and securing pricing models that improve cost and service; driving adherence to service level and monitoring performance while managing variance; always driving accountability of vendors and partners 

Identifying world-class intermodal transportation management capabilities, both international and domestically

Identifying and onboarding existing and new carriers including 3rd party, contractor, and crowdsource providers; setting up new vendors, rate cards and continually identifying the overall digital delivery strategy and it’s mix (DTC vs. BOSS, national vs. regional vs. last mile provider); integrating technology and monitoring performance 

Participating in regular business/leadership briefings; converting the business needs to service terms; developing quarterly business reviews, vendor summits and regular/periodic reviews for carrier problem performers

Supporting network failure analysis on inventory positioning, demand forecasting, carrier selection, services levels and fulfillment node parameters to drive optimal network performance 

Proactively managing AEO’s shipping expense; identifying and solving for opportunities that will drive customer delight and generate cost reduction 

In partnership with the Supply Chain Leadership Team, increasing velocity of outbound logistics and delivering cost savings in overall digital/DTC transportation spend; specifically by assisting with the management of all outbound planning and optimization responsibilities which includes order shipping logic and inventory exposure logic  

Defining, building and testing new service capabilities and sourcing changes to enable in-market node, same day, next day and two-day delivery models; including steps towards personalization and localization experiences

Managing the carrier selection rules based on the reliability of carriers, adherence to SLAs and cost performance (including accessorial); serving as the point of escalation for operational issues as needed 

Identifying and building a new carrier base; actively managing the rate cards and benchmarking gaps to rates vs. performance

Fostering collaborative relationships with various leaders and serving as a role model leader for the organization; displaying thought leadership and alignment with the Company’s strategies and core values

Driving supply chain efficiency/effectiveness as well as solutions to meet ever-changing customer service expectations; pushing innovative solutions for the betterment of our Customers as well as in support of the overall business strategy

Ensuring effective expense management and development/implementation of strategies to drive reductions in costs while maintaining or improving service levels

Building cross-functional partnerships, leveraging insights from various areas of the business to inform contract negotiation and planning processes (Legal, Finance, etc.)

Leading and coaching direct reports through a wide array of topics including business strategy to the tactical execution of the strategy; providing expertise on complex topics, leaning on prior experiences and know-how to guide others to meet or exceed goals; championing the development of associates, ensuring a robust succession plan

Qualifications: 
Bachelor’s Degree required in Logistics, Supply Chain, or related field; advanced Degree (Master’s / MBA) preferred 
Minimum of 10 years’ experience working with supply chain management/logistics; preferably with a large carrier 
Demonstrated ability of managing cost, performance, planning optimization; experience working with large, global retail organizations a plus 
Strong understanding of transportation management methods; extensive experience reg: carrier models, ocean and air contracts and overseeing negotiations 
Experience with data-driven analytics, metrics, KPIs to measure and drive results
Strong communication including written/verbal
Experience presenting to large audiences including top leadership  
Ability to build trust and effectively influence at all levels of the organization  
Demonstrated experience leading a diverse, high-performing team; fostering “ready now” talent as future successors 
Ability to travel
